Formed in 1919 by the Plymouth Society of Friends
(Quakers) as an educational settlement, Swarthmore has developed into an
important centre for adult education in Plymouth, fulfilling our principle
objective of advancing public education for persons over the age of 18 in Plymouth and
the surrounding area.
To best achieve our objectives we work
co-operatively with Plymouth City Council’s Adult and
Community Learning Service and others to provide leisure and recreation courses
as well as Skills for Life training and courses that help increase the
employment potential and social cohesion of our students.
Our premises are dedicated to the provision of adult
education, which gives us a greater ability to cater for a wider range of
students than other providers in Plymouth who only
have access to accommodation in the evenings. Currently about 65% of our courses are day time and are very popular
with older people who do not wish to go out in the evenings, parents of school
and pre-school children, and unemployed people.
Funding for our operation comes from the
Learning and Skills Council via courses run by Plymouth Adult and Community Learning Service, as well as income from
private bookings.
Swarthmore Centre for Adult Education is a
company limited by guarantee, No. 01568398, incorporated on 16 June 1981 and
registered as a charity on 6 August 1981, No. 283026. Its Memorandum and Articles of Association, as incorporated on 16
June 1981 and as amended 9 November 1992, govern the charity.
